Garmin Forerunner 30 reaches South-East Asia – News | GadFit

October 16, 2017

If you tried to search for the Garmin Forerunner 30, you’d be directed to the UK site. Matter of fact, you can’t actually find the Forerunner 30 on the US Garmin site at all.

So it was a surprise when Garmin Singapore announced the availability of the Forerunner 30 this month; specifically from 21st October on wards. Let’s take a look at some of the specs of this entry level running watch with wrist based heart rate measurements.

The Garmin Forerunner 30 appears identical to the Forerunner 35 which was Garmin’s attempt at marrying entry level GPS watch with wrist based heart rate measurements. Comparatively, the Forerunner 30 is a pared down version of the Forerunner 35.

The obvious difference is the reduction in battery life and the loss of HR broadcasting features via ANT+.

The other huge change is the configuration of the navigation buttons. Previously, the Forerunner 35 could only scroll downwards. The new Garmin Forerunner 30 allows the user to scroll both upwards and downwards easily.

Garmin Forerunner 30 features:

  • All day activity tracking. Counts steps, distance, calories, active minutes, resting HR, sleep
  • Wrist based optical heart rate sensors
  • GPS, accelerometer based distance estimation for indoor runs without GPS
  • Sunlight readable display with back light
  • Vibration alerts and smart notifications
  • Water resistant to 5 ATM
  • Up to 5 days battery life span in watch mode and up to 8 hours in workout mode
  • Auto pause, auto lap, manual lap
  • Move IQ enabled
  • VO2 max estimation

So is it a good buy? It does have its strengths. The Forerunner 30 has an appropriately sized display and is a decently priced running based GPS watch. Having used the Forerunner 35, I dare say it’s good enough for most users who have no use for ANT+ features, as Garmin would have noticed when they decided to roll out the Forerunner 30.

In time to come, the Forerunner 35 will also receive VO2 max estimation via an update.

The Forerunner 30 is available in turquoise, amethyst and slate grey and will be available from 21 October from Garmin’s official online store on Lazada for a suggested retail price of SGD 229.
