Garmin targets Kids’ activity levels with Vivofit Jr.

*3rd April 2017: Check out the Garmin Vivofit Jr. activiy tracker here.

The domain of kids’ activity levels has traditionally been left in the hands of schools and Physical Education specialists and Garmin wants in now. The new Vivofit Jr. is Garmin’s answer to your child’s resistance to household chores and dwindling activity levels by adding the fun element and involving the entire family.

Beside’s Xiaomi’s Mitu watch, the Vivofit Jr is probably the few child focused activity trackers on the market.

Featuring a 1 year battery life, the Vivofit Jr. tracks your child’s steps, sleep and activity levels. The single changeable wrist band loops over the kid’s wrist without the need for pesky clasps. A tiny sunlight readable display shows the step count, progress towards goal or the task timers.

I personally thought Garmin’s winner lie in the mobile app rather than the activity tracker. The Vivofit Jr. mobile app cleverly involves the parent and the child within a chore-rewards system.vivofit jr screen-grabI particularly like the fact that the parents can assign tasks and reward “coins” based on completed chores. Tasks can be chosen from a list of pre-loaded chores or simply create your own.

The entire family is also involved in a daily step challenge which pretty much ensures everyone ups their activity levels.vivofit jr being-usedSet task timers such as 2 minutes for brushing of teeth, 15 minutes of TV time or 30 minutes of active play outdoors and the fitness tracker will sound off with an audible alert.

Once the daily 60 minutes active time is met, kids will unlock fun facts on the Vivofit Jr. mobile app’s adventure trail, motivating them to keep reaching their goals.
