We’ve all been in situations where we’re running on the road with music in our ears when a vehicle zips frighteningly close by, clearly not seeing us until the very last minute because it’s too dim. Close call that could have been avoided with cumbersome headlights. Nova wants to change all that with their self illuminating jacket.
Nova’s concept isn’t new and I’ve previously written about another crowdfunding product that aimed to make the runner more visible under low light conditions. However, the company has gone a step further by implementing 30 plus lux level lightguide strips unto the running jacket itself. A tiny half ounce battery ensures 8 hours of illumination visible from up to 450 feet away.
Illumination aside, Nova took into consideration the importance of practical use and designed the jacket to be light-weight and all weather breathable. You will also find a water-resistant smartphone pocket on the sleeve complemented by an earphone cord hole to keep wires in place during runs.
In essence, you’re getting a well thought out running jacket good for all day wear that illuminates on demand.
“Because traditional reflectors are not efficient in low light conditions or blind-spots, forty percent of runners are at high risk of injury due to night time motor accidents,” said Sid Amalean, Co-founder of NOVA. “With NOVA, people can focus on their run without worrying about personal safety, secure in the knowledge that they are visible to oncoming traffic.”
Nova self-illuminating jacket features:
- Patent-pending Light Guide technology activates 3 modes: low, high and blinking
- Lightweight, breathable, water-resistant machine washable jacket
- Water-resistant smartphone pocket on the sleeve
- Earphone cord hole designed to keep headphones from tangling while on the move
- Half ounce battery concealed in a hidden pocket illuminates for up to 8 hours on a single charge
- Lights ensure people are visible up to 450 feet away
You can head over to Nova’s Indiegogo campaign page where an early pledge will get you a significant discount off their illuminating jacket which is slated to ship in March 2018.
The Nova self-illuminating running jacket is just one of many products from Twinery; the innovation arm of MAS. The company has worked with partners such as Lumo, Stanford University and Loughborough University.
