Back in May this year I managed to get my hands on a pair of UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE, the first pair of smart running shoes since Nike’s now defunct foot pod. Though it wasn’t game changing, the UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE heralded the coming of meaningful metrics from foot wearables. 6 months later, the company is back with a new line of UA Record Equipped footwear featuring three unique styles.
UA Record Equipped footwear features:
- Connects to MapMyRun mobile app for smart running experience
- Jump Test scientifically measures muscular fatigue level
- One year MVP subscription to MapMyRun; access training plans, audio coaching, live tracking, advanced analytics
If it’s anything like its predecessor, the UA Record Equipped footwear series should feature non-removable Bluetooth enabled tracking modules built into the shoe. When connected to the MapMyRun mobile app, the shoes are capable of tracking cadence, distance and usage.
The new feature here is the Jump test which Under Armour claims is capable of scientifically measuring muscular fatigue levels prior to working out through the average air time of a sequence of jumps.
According to Mike Lee, Chief Digital Officer at Under Armour “We are taking a scientific approach to recovery that is directly utilizing real-time data from your body to determine what level of workout you should execute to guide your training.”
With the UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE, there was only one version of fit with different aesthetic design. This time round, UA has announced 3 different variations of the UA Record Equipped foot wear.
UA SpeedForm Gemini 3 RE ($159.99) and the UA SpeedForm Europa RE ($159.99) are designed for long runs with the former suited to neutral runners and the latter for runners who require stability.
Then there’s the incredibly lightweight (7 oz.) UA SpeedForm Velociti RE ($139.99) racer.
The entire line of UA Record Equipped running footwear is available for pre-order on UA.com beginning January 5th and includes an annual MVP subscription to MapMyRun with access to training plans, audio coaching, live tracking, advanced analytics, as well as multi-language VIP support.
