Garmin Sleep Widget – News – GadFit Singapore

June 4, 2020

Something interesting was brewing over at the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro beta firmware update site, the announcement of an on-device Garmin sleep widget 🙂

Garmin’s wearables have tracked sleep the last few years but the data was only accessible on the mobile app and not on the watch.

The seeding of this feature on the Fenix 6 Pro beta firmware might suggest a change of things to come given that the optical HR sensors on the latest series of watches are the same, think Venu and Vivoactive 4. If Garmin can combine the SpO2 readings together with respiratory and present it together with sleep data, I think they are on to something big.

Polar’s Nightly Recharge appears to be the most comprehensive sleep recovery tracking feature on a wearable for now. Suunto has their sleep tracking licensed from Firstbeat and that will give you a score directly on the watch as well. So if Garmin’s beta feature is eventually rolled out to all compatible wearables, it will definitely be a welcomed move.

While there are those who are skeptical of sleep tracking from a single wearable, the implementation of a viewable sleep tracking widget on the watch will no doubt make sleep data more accessible than viewing it on a mobile app.

With the Apple Watch series 6 rumored to have native sleep tracking, it will be interesting to see how each company continue to value-add and improve the accuracy of their sleep tech.

All the better for the consumer given we sleep nearly a third of our lives away.
