You might not have heard of BSX Technologies but come August 2017 this company aims to deliver the world’s first hydration monitor called LVL. (RRP $199.99)
BSX Technologies’ LVL hydration monitor simultaneously senses your hydration, heart rate, and activity to help you optimize every workout. It prompts you in real-time, alerting you to exactly how much fluid you need and what type of performance boost you can expect.
Users can also input their mood and over time, LVL uses the data to predict how sleep, activity and hydration will affect future moods.
LVL HYDRATION MONITOR FEATURES:
- All day activity tracker. Records steps, distance, floors climbed and calories
- Sleep tracking with advanced REM and deep sleep metrics
- Measures body hydration level
- Measure heart rate from the wrist
- Up to 4 days battery life
- Supports iOS and Android
- IP67 certified
What seperates BSX Technologies from other wearable tech companies is the adoption of red rather than green light. Basically nearly all wearables these days emits green light to measure heart rate from the skin. BSX Technologies’ devices emits near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which is red in colour, for a few reasons.
According to BSX Technologies, NIRS can simultaneously measure 10 times more physiological parameters than green light. Plus it’s not affected by melanin so skin color, tattoos, freckle patterns will not pose a challenge. Finally, industry grade levels of accuracy. Sounds great doesn’t it?In October 2016, the LVL hydration monitor crowd sourced for funding and perks included the opportunity to order the LVL hydration monitor at 50% off the recommended retail price of $199.99. The target was a mere $50,000 but the company managed to receive more than a million bucks by the end of the campaign. Clearly there’s immense interest in a hydration monitor.
If you’d still like to get your hands on a unit, you can still pre-order the LVL hydration monitor at about 25% off at BSX Technologies website. The delivery target of August 2017 gives the company some time to perfect their product. Despite the press pictures, I’m inclined to believe the final LVL hydration monitor to reach consumers is still months away. As with all crowdfunded projects, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
